Hey Finnian, Tell us a bit about yourself.
INTERVIEWING – FINNIAN MCMANUS
EXHIBITION IV – COLONY
My name is Finnian MacManus. I’m 16 years of age and I am thrilled to be a part of Cosmosys. I’ve been living in Chicago since I was born, but half of my family is in Ireland, who I don’t get to see too much. I’ve been using Photoshop and 3D programs for almost a year now, and I feel great when I get to visualize my ideas and concepts on the screen. I play tennis and piano, mostly jazz and blues, but I love all types of music. I go to a pretty creative school which works very differently from an average highschool.
When and how did you first become interested in Art?
I’ve been interested in visualizing sci-fi ideas since I was very young… at the age of 8 I used to draw 2D space ideas all the time. Of course they were never good, and I’m not good at drawing now, but it was still fun. I got photoshop near the end of last December, and I was immediately obsessed with the creation of abstract images. At the time, I still tried to do sci-fi themed art but I was no where close to be skilled enough to work like that. Instead of starting in signatures as most forum-goers do, I started with large art because I had no idea what a forum was at the time. It was about a month and a half later when I met my first real graphics forum, which set me on the road of improvement.
What are your influences in general?
Any type of geometric shape I see, I can usually visualize a nice scene to go along with it. Nature and landscapes are cool sources for inspiration but I usually don’t draw on them as much as I do other objects. The most inspiring artist to me is Steve Burg; who is a great concept artist who got me interested in developing 3D sci-fi scenes. Another inspirational artist that I love is John Berkey who unfortunately passed away in 2008- he had just incredible concept art… I would suggest looking both of them up!
Is anyone in your family an artist?
My dad is a landscape designer, but was originally a painter and then an architect. My mom is heavily involved with the art community as a journalist; But most of the artists in my family would come from my Irish side.
What is your favorite piece so far in your career?
I would have to say Exoterra right now, as it’s the first time i’ve been able to successfully create what I’ve always dreamt of doing, and while it certainly took a long time, that style is what I’ll now be focusing on.
What do you see yourself doing in the near future?
After college, I really don’t know. I plan to go to college for either Game Design or Concept Art, but I don’t really know where either path will take me. Hopefully somewhere were I can afford ramen every day.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to mention that every piece ive done for Cosmosys wouldn’t have been made if not for the help of some wonderful people, who I would like to point out now. Just a big thank you to all the artists in CMS who have helped me so much over the past two months; You have no idea how much I appreciate it, and I’m so glad I could be a part of this group with all of you skilled and talented people! A BIG thanks to Alee, JTR, Sythest and Joshie(Daze) for taking the time to work with me on improving my pieces. Also, a thanks to Clyzm who first set me on the right path. A final thanks to Chris, AKA Pain who picked me out of the forum worlds and introduced me to artgroups.
