This exhibition’s featured artist is Alek Todrink, an illustrator and designer from Norwich, England. In the name of Cosmosys Art Collective I would like to congratulate you for the great work for “Finite”. Let’s start by asking you, when did you first became interested in illustration and graphics?
INTERVIEWING – ALEK TODRINK
EXHIBITION VIII – FINITE
Thanks a lot for featuring me! Past CMS exhibits have had some amazing featured artists and this exhibit is really strong too so I’m very flattered. I first became interested in graphics about 5 years ago, my mum bought Photoshop CS3 to edit her photography so I installed it on my computer and started making forum signatures.
Although you joined right after we released “Experiments II” you have certainly managed to stand out in the group, how was your experience of working with us in these 3 months ?
I’ve always liked Cosmosys’ work so after I got accepted I wanted to make my own contribution, my experience was really good. I already knew a few members from other forums so I was pretty sure there’d be a good atmosphere. I like it when people don’t take themselves too seriously so I like the jokey atmosphere too!
The atmosphere is indeed special. Could you describe your usual process when creating an illustration and what does inspire you mostly?
Creative work by other artists always inspires me, I try to come up with my own ideas from within to make pieces though, otherwise they always turn out bad. I start almost every illustration as an experiment, without too many ideas about where it’s going. If it goes well I try to come up with ideas to improve it and make it more interesting. I normally create them over a long period of time, like 2 months. I don’t work on it every day, or even every week, but the time helps me think of ideas and critique the work myself.
Interesting approach, what is the software and perhaps hardware that you are using to create your art ?
I use a mix of Photoshop and Illustrator, I have an Intuos 4 Medium, which is baller. I also draw up rough sketches on paper from time to time.
Is there any style of art that you would like to learn or develop more?
I want to develop my photography more as it’s pretty bad at the moment, I’m also thinking of dabbling a little in traditional drawing and digipainting but I don’t know really! I always like to experiment so sometimes I end up doing things I never would have thought I’d ever do.
Which of your submissions for “Finite” is your favourite, and how did you come up with the concept ?
I like Enter The Void because it took a lot of effort and it’s consistent with my previous work. It started without much of an idea, then I came up with the idea of doing an abstract interpretation of the infinity symbol. It took a few doodles to come up with something I liked, then I came up with an idea I liked and decided to finish it. The colours were a real pain.
Can you tell us about some of your goals and plans for the future?
I haven’t been very productive this year in general. I want to spend a lot more time working on pieces and trying to come up with new ideas. I find that reading and watching good films helps inspire me too so I want to do more of that too. I just want to improve though really.
