Hi Joakim Olaussen (aka Joaking). I’m excited to introduce you here as our featured artist of the artpack ‘Self Portrait’. How are you feeling today?
INTERVIEWING – JOAKIM OLAUSSEN
EXHIBITION XI – SELF PORTRAIT
Hi! Wow yeah, thank you! I’m feeling great, finally we can show the world our newest pack! I’m glad to be the featured artist, because I’m really proud of everyone’s contributions for this exhibition.
For the ones that don’t know you, can you give us a short introduction of yourself?
Yeah sure! I’m a 19 years old digital artist from Norway. I’ve been working with Photoshop seriously for the last couple of years, but I’ve been doing it on and off since 2005. Besides Photoshop I like to just chill, I go to school but I’m hoping to finish it soon and start working with graphic design.
Is that what you want to do for a living? Being a designer?
No doubt! It’d be great if I could just live as an artist. Say stupid stuff, work at home and sell my art for way much more than it’s worth. But second best would be to work for a great firm that has some nice clients.
That’s great. You’ve been around Cosmosys for a time now, and you had to deal with some themes before. When the ‘Self Portrait’ was decided, were you already flowing over with ideas?
Yes, I’ve been a member for a while now, and I’ve really liken all the themes so far, but Self-Portrait was my favorite. Ever since it was first suggested I’ve had ideas for it, and if I had more time I would’ve had like 10 submissions for this pack, because I feel there is still so much to do with it.
What is your opinion about the pack? Do you feel we, as a team, succeeded in conveying the theme well?
I think at first some of the artists were a bit frightened by the idea of a self portrait. But after a while we all understood that it’s not just as easy as that. There lies so much more under those two words. It’s a great theme and I think that we’ve done a pretty neat job, the fact that we’ve produced a really nice pack in a short period of time, with a theme that seems pretty straightforward is to me really something.
What is your favorite piece from this pack?
That’s a hard one! I really like “ALIVE” by Martin, but at the same time “Reckoning” by Andres Gallardo Albajar is just so awesome. Not only the dedication of almost killing himself from suffocating, but also the quality of the two shots he made, where one ultimately ended up as final contribution to this pack.
And now, what is your personal favorite? Which piece you made yourself do you like most?
I’m quite happy with “king.gif”, maybe just because I had an idea that I knew would take so much time, but I still did it and it turned out pretty nice. I think it maybe showed me that even though at first it may seem impossible (I actually had no idea how I would do it), it’s still achievable with some dedication and time.
I also love that piece. You’ve been promoted to Administrator of the Cosmosys Artpack not so long ago. Can you tell us a bit more about what you do behind the scenes?
Thank you! Yeah it was a decision made a while back. I really like Cosmosys, it’s a great art collective with awesome members, so dedicating a little bit of time to help is no problem. We’re in the process of making Cosmosys even better so I’m hoping I’ll be involved in it.
Themed exhibition or Freestyle? You may only pick one.
There are pros and cons to both, but a good theme beats freestyle any day. I think we at Cosmosys are pretty good at coming up with themes because we have a pretty long discussion about it where everyone’s input is taken into account. The positive thing about a freestyle pack is that people can just dump pieces they have in it, but as we say in Cosmosys: “Quality > Quantity”.
Well, Joakim, thanks for your dedication over the past few years and we hope we can hold you here for a long time. Congratulations on being the featured artist! Any last words?
It’s been my pleasure! Thanks a lot. My last words will be that just do what makes you happy. And also keep an eye out for Cosmosys, we’ll soon take over the world.
